Two times a year, Putrada Ekadashi is observed. Putrada Ekadashi refers to both Ekadashi
during Paush Shukla Paksha and Ekadashi during Shravan Shukla Paksha.
The English calendar now places Paush Shukla Paksha Ekadashi in the month of December or
January and Shravan Shukla Paksha Ekadashi in the month of July or August. In North Indian
states, Paush month Putrada Ekadashi is more well-liked than Shravan month Putrada
Ekadashi, which is more significant to people in other states
Significance of Putrada Ekadashi
Hinduism places the most value on rituals carried out at the time of birth and death.
Hinduism specifies the number of funeral rites that must only be carried out by the son. It is
thought that the son must perform the burial ceremonies in order for the soul to be freed. The
son also fulfills the obligation of practicing standard Shraddha in order to appease the deceased
person’s soul, whether it is on Earth or in Heaven.
For couples who adhere to Hinduism’s belief of “life after death,” not having a boy child
becomes a source of grief. Couples who want to have a boy kid are urged to observe the
Putrada Ekadashi fast.
Shukla, Shravan In particular among the Vaishnava community, Paksha Ekadashi is often
referred to as Pavitropana Ekadashi or Pavitra Ekadashi.
Fasting Ritual During Putrada Ekadashi
The word Parana implies ending a fast. After sunrise on the day following the Ekadashi fast,
Ekadashi Parana is completed. Unless Dwadashi is over before daylight, Parana must be
performed throughout Dwadashi Tithi. It is comparable to an offense to not do Parana at
Dwadashi.
Hari Vasara is not the time to practice Parana. Before breaking the fast, one ought to wait for
Hari Vasara to be finished. The first day of the fourth day of Dwadashi Tithi is called Hari Vasara.
Pratahkal is the most popular time to break the fast. Breaking the fast during Madhyahna is not
recommended. If for any reason during Pratahkal one is unable to break the fast, one should do
so after Madhyahna.
On two consecutive days during Ekadashi, fasting is occasionally advised. It is suggested that
Smartha follow fasting with her family only on the first day. Sanyasis, widows, and those seeking
Moksha are advised to observe the second Ekadashi fast, which is an alternative. Smartha’s
alternate Ekadashi fasting recommendation falls on the same day as Vaishnava Ekadashi.
For devoted followers looking for Lord Vishnu’s love and adoration, fasting on both days of
Ekadashi is advised.
